এই প্রশ্নটি Pin point error এবং Sentence correction এর জন্য খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এই প্রশ্নটি দুইধনের হতে পারেঃ
~প্রথমত ভগ্নাংশের সঠিক ব্যবহার
~দ্বিতীয়ত Verb এর সঠিক ব্যবহার
ভগ্নাংশের সঠিক ব্যবহারঃ আমরা জানি যে, একটি ভগ্নাংশের মাঝে থাকে লব এবং হর। আর আমরা গাণিতিকভাবে সেটি সবাই খুব ভালোভাবেই জানি। তবে ইংরেজি বাক্যে সেটি আবার কী রকম?
One-fourth এটিই একটি ইংরেজি বাক্যের ভগ্নাংশ।
এখানে,
লব হলো - one
হর হলো - fourth
এখন আমাদের Confusion এর জায়গাটা হলো এখানে fourth হবে নাকি fourths?
Note: লব যদি এক এর অধিক হয় তাহলে হর Plural হবে।
যেহেতু One এক এর বেশি না তাই এখানে Fourths হয়নি বরং Fourth হয়েছে।
Incorrect: two-fourth
Correct : two-fourths
Verb এর সঠিক ব্যবহারঃ Fraction বা ভগ্নাংশের পরবর্তী Verb টি নির্ভর করে তার পরবর্তী Noun টির উপর।
Note: যদি ভগ্নাংশের পরবর্তী Noun টি Singular হয় অথবা Non Count Noun/Uncountable noun হয় এক্ষেত্রে Verb টি হবে Singular.
For example:
Two-thirds of the work has been finished.
Here, The work = uncountable noun
One-fifth of the assignment has been completed.
Here, The assignment = singular noun
Note: যদি ভগ্নাংশের পর Noun টি Plural হয় তাহলে Verb টিও Plural হবে।
Two-thirds of the children were present in the function.
Here, children= plural noun
শর্টকাটঃ ভগ্নাংশের ক্ষেত্রে, ভগ্নাংশের পরবর্তী Noun টি যদি
singular হয় তাহলে Verb হবে singular আর যদি plural হয় তাহলে Verb হবে Plural. একইভাবে Percentage এর ক্ষেত্রেও একই নিয়ম প্রযোজ্য।
Fifty percent of the land.... cultivated.
